Shooting the best view in town

I was recently commissioned by York Minster to update the information boards at the top of the central tower. These boards describe what can be seen in each direction from the top of the tower, which is over 70m high.

The old boards were faded, and due to changes in the skyline, way out of date.

The shots in each direction had to be taken at different times and days to optimise weather and light conditions.

There were several times when I scaled the 275 steps only to find the view wasn’t as clear as I’d hoped, but after 6 ascents of the tower, (equivalent to climbing the Empire State Building), I had all the shots I needed.

The new information boards are now in place and are enjoyed by around 90,000 visitors from all over the world every year.

You don’t have to climb the tower to see the view, as here’s the shots, but I highly recommend it - the experience is second to none and it’s an honour to think how many people will be making sense of what they can see thanks to my images.
