10 essential tips before you have your headshot done

We do so much business online now, that your headshot is more important now than it's ever been. From your LinkedIn profile picture to your company website, showing the world who you are instills trust and helps to open a conversation.

Before you book a headshot photographer to do your business portraits however, here's ten essential tips to consider:

1: Stay off the drink the night before - this might sound obvious, but if you don’t feel your best, you won’t look your best.

2: Have a change of clothes - just adding or removing a jacket can make all the difference and give you more options.

3: Think about your ‘audience’ - that might seem odd, but if you’re a trendy designer, you need to look different to the CEO of a major financial organisation. This should reflect in what you’re wearing, your stance, your clothing.

4: Clean your glasses - those smudge marks will show up.

5: Be consistent - if you have several offices in different locations, try and get a consistent look across all the headshots. Nothing screams ‘new member of staff’ like a poor selfie on the website next to a set of nice headshots.

6: Be yourself - don’t imitate a headshot of someone else that you’ve seen, just relax and the true you will come out.

7: Let me direct you - I’ll help you during a headshot shoot - sometimes you won’t even realise what I’m doing or why I’m doing it, but they’re all little tricks to help you relax and look your best.

8: Don’t worry - I don’t want to see a bad headshot of you any more than you do so if you’re having a bad day and you have a spot on the end of your nose, I’ll take care of it! (Only in post-production though - I don’t offer medical services on the day)

9: Yes, I can make you look ten years younger, but it’s not what you should expect - your headshot should be accurate so that when you meet someone for the first time, they know it’s you.

10: Carefully consider the type of shot you need - the examples above are all different styles - for advice see this post .
